Apple (Steve Jobs specifically) has long condemned Flash as being battery-killing, slow, and insecure. He disliked the system so much in fact, that Apple never supported it on their mobile devices which gave rise to a popular new programming language: HTML5.
Well, Steve Job’s hate of Flash may have been well-founded as Adobe announced this week that they would stop developing Flash for the future, and would only support existing applications.
“Adobe will continue to support existing licensees who are planning on supporting Flash Player for web browsing on digital home devices and are using the Flash Player Porting Kit to do so. However we believe the right approach to deliver content on televisions is through applications, not a web browsing experience, and we will continue to encourage the device and content publishing community down that path,”
said Adobe.
This isn’t a big surprise to those who have been following the contest over Flash, not having mobile support on the world’s most popular phones and pads was a sort of death knell for Flash.
If you have a Flash site, it might be a good time to start considering a replacement.
